Scholarships

Each season we look to support the development of young musicians through scholarships in either conducting or singing. The most recent person to benefit from this was Hannah Thomson, Conducting Scholar 2025/6. For the 2026/7 season each society is looking to recruit another Conducting Scholar. This opportunity is aimed at budding professionals aged 18–35 who are looking to work in the music field.

What we offer:

Our Conducting Scholars work with the Ilkley and Otley choirs – ambitious and friendly groups of around 80 members each, who perform together and enjoy singing large-scale choral works.  This season’s scholarship will run from September 2026 to June 2027 and the benefits include:

  • Specific coaching from our experienced Musical Director Alex Kyle
  • The space to broaden conducting skills
  • Performance experience
  • A friendly and welcoming environment in which to learn
  • A monthly honorarium equivalent to £1,225 for the year, dependent on attendance.

What we are looking for:

  • Strong musical literacy and some conducting experience (note that it’s an advantage to be a singer to join in the choral repertoire)
  • A willingness to learn on the job at each rehearsal
  • Confidence and clarity in leading a large choir
  • Attendance at Monday evening rehearsals in Ilkley (see here for dates) or very Tuesday evenings in Otley (see here for dates)
  • Attendance at all scheduled concerts (see here for dates)

How to apply:

Please send your CV to either of the people on our Contact page with a covering letter detailing relevant experience and how this scholarship might benefit you and your future goals.
